KV-POP in COVID Times
Let’s start with gratitude.
What would we have done during 2020 and 2021 without our dogs and cats? Thank you, furry friends, for keeping us company during the long months of the past two difficult years. At the beginning of the pandemic, we didn’t know if vet clinics would even be able to stay open. But thankfully they did stay open and so we were able to continue our work. KV-POP distributed hundreds of vouchers and coupons in 2020 and 2021. We missed out on the fun of getting together with other KV-POP members at our annual membership meeting and at Woofstock. Hopefully we can get together in 2022. We are grateful to our members for continuing to believe in our mission and supporting the organization through paying membership dues and making additional donations. KV-POP Loves Summer Festivals!
|
Thanks to everyone who stopped by to visit our booth at the Community Roots Fest or the Red Barn Festival. We love hearing that how much KV-POP helped you. We are so glad to hear how that neighborhood cat is doing now that she has been fixed!
We also help people complete applications for spay/neuter assistance at these events. We make recommendations for veterinary clinics. And we trade homemade goods for cash donations.

We're Pet Friendly!
The Missouri Department of Agriculture has awarded KV-POP several grants from the Missouri Pet Spay and Neuter Fund. We are tremendously grateful and eager to put this money to work in northeast Missouri!
Missouri’s Pet Spay and Neuter Program is designed to assist low-cost spay and neuter options for dogs and cats throughout the state. The Pet Spay and Neuter Program is funded through the sales of “I’m Pet Friendly” license plates through the Missouri Department of Revenue. Each sale of this plate donates $25 to the fund.
In the award letter the Deputy Director of Agriculture, writes:
“We commend … your agency for all your efforts to provide your community with low-cost spay and neuter services.”

Thanks, Kirksville Motor Company!
We were thrilled to accept this $1,000 donation from Kirksville Motor Company (local Toyota dealership) on August 8, 2016. This new business has made a practice of philanthropy in our community. We are so honored that KV-POP (benefiting local people and their cats and dogs) was chosen as a recipient. This money will go far in support of our spay/neuter efforts. Special thanks to Hector (pictured left) for giving us the good news. Also pictured are board members Mark Laughlin, Laci Cook, and Bridget Thomas. See KTVO coverage here.
Uh, oh: it's Kitten Season. Let's feed 'em and fix 'em!
|
Thanks, Kirksville, for donating 245 pounds of cat (and dog) food and $340 during our third annual Kitten Season Food Drive on May 14, 2016! Wow!
The food donations were divided between Field of Dreams Rescue and the Adair County Humane Society. This will help feed the many homeless kittens and cats in their care. (Opt to adopt!) The cash donations stay with KV-POP and will be used to pay for spay/neuter coupons. Remind your friends to fix their cats at 5 months! An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure! |
March is the BEST Time for Spay/Neuter!
Thanks to the staff at Adair County Public Library and the Schuyler County Library District (esp. Jill Parsons, pictured at left) for hosting our coupon giveaways! Each coupon is worth $25 off spay/neuter. We gave away 120 coupons in Kirksville (World Spay Day, 2/23) and 60 coupons in Lancaster (2/27). That's the highest number of coupons ever given in a local spay/neuter initiative!
Thanks to local clinics for agreeing to offer discounted rates on spay/neuter! Schedules are filling up fast! If you have a coupon, call to make your appointment ASAP! Coupons must be redeemed by April 30, 2016.
Thanks to KTVO, Kirksville Daily Express, and KIRX for promoting our March spay/neuter campaign! If you missed us on Good Morning Heartland, the 10 O'clock News, or the front page of Sunday's (2/21) Kirksville Daily Express, click on the links above to view now.

Woofstock

|
Thanks to everyone who came out to Woofstock -- our hayride, hootenanny, & bonfire bash -- on October 24, 2015. People seemed to have a good time. The setting was beautiful, the food was delicious, and the company was superb. Plus we raised $1240 to help spay/neuter local pets.
Special thanks to all the volunteers who made this event possible, including Claire Peckosh, Logan Peckosh, Meg Edwards, Mary Updyke, Cindy Mayberry, Betty Lou Mennemeyer, Alex Tetlak, Kathy Adler, Laci Cook, Bob Mielke, Avery Tillet Ke, Bridget Thomas, Judy Shuey, Cecil Shuey, and the various musicians (Ron, James, Joey, and others) who jammed while the fire burned.
Let's do it again next year!

Trap-Neuter-Return in Kirksville
Trap-Neuter-Return of feral cats is now legal in Kirksville, thanks to the work of KV-POP and Field of Dreams Rescue. The two groups worked with City Staff (especially Police Chief Hughes) to enact this change.
On August 17, 2015, the Kirksville City Council voted to approve key changes to the "Animals" section of the KV Municipal Code to allow TNR. The program will get started after an initial fund-raising phase.

KV-POP Annual Meeting and Birthday Party: Tuesday, September 15th
Happy Birthday to KV-POP!
KV-POP's annual membership meeting and second birthday party took place on Tuesday, September 15th.
Thanks to everyone who came out to celebrate our past successes and make plans for our third year.
Thanks to the Adair County Health Department for letting us use their meeting room.
Treats and Toys at the annual Holiday Market
KV-POP sold homemade treats/toys for dogs and cats on Saturday, December 6th at Truman's Student Union Building, 901 S. Franklin. Students and other shoppers stopped by to pick up gifts for the furry friends on their holiday lists! We raised enough money to fix a large female dog, so that she won't produce litter after litter (10-14 pups each) of dogs who end up homeless or forever tied up on a chain. That's a good day's work!
Kirksville Has a Dog Park!
September 6, 2014 is an historical day in Kirksville! Our first off-leash dog park opened this morning at 10:00 a.m.. Thanks so much to the City of Kirksville and the committee that managed this project so splendidly!
Regular exercise relieves boredom and keeps dogs calm, healthy, and happy. Calm dogs fit more easily into our families, don't chew on furniture, and are not as likely to be surrendered to a shelter or rescue.
Several friends of KV-POP made special donations to the Bark Park to get the group's name on the donor wall. We believe that this park will improve the bond between dogs and their people for years to come.

We now have KV-POP gear (t-shirts, tote bags, mugs) for sale at a Zazzle store! Spread the word of KV-POP! Proceeds pay for spay/neuter assistance in the Kirksville area.
KV-POP at Kirksville Farmers' Market
Thanks to everyone who came out to the farmers' market! It's always nice to catch up with KV-POP friends. At the market we trade toys/treats for donations and talk to folks about spay/neuter assistance.
Check out our new banner (photo, above). We also have new business cards, stickers, and postcards. All these items have been donated by various board members. Your cash donations go directly to spay/neuter!

KV-POP First Annual Benefit Yard Sale
KV-POP's Benefit Yard Sale was a great success. Between the
money raised Fri/Sat plus what we made selling some of the items on
ebay earlier, we took in $915! Just imagine the number of unwanted
cats and dogs we can prevent with that amount! Thanks to everyone who
stopped by to buy something or even just to say hello!
Thanks also to our supporters for donating such great stuff for us to sell at our first big sale. We had pet supplies, kids' clothing, women's clothing, and many household items. All proceeds will benefit this community as we help our neighbors spay/neuter their pets. 909 E. Line St. Friday (6/13) 12-5 and Saturday (6/14) 8-2.

Spring Progress Report on KTVO's "Good Morning, Heartland."
Thanks to Ela Soroka and KTVO for hosting KV-POP President Bridget Thomas on Tuesday, June 10. Bridget reported on our March spay/neuter campaign, provided info about how to apply for spay/neuter assistance, and announced our new status as a 501(c)(3) non-profit public charity. She also looked ahead to two upcoming events: the First Annual KV-POP Benefit Garage Sale (6/13 and 6/14) and the KV-POP 501 Challenge.

Kitten Season Food Drive
Spring brings "kitten season" -- a time when animal rescue groups are overwhelmed by the number of kittens being surrendered. Sadly, there are more kittens than homes.
To help the community cope with this problem, KV-POP held a special food drive (6/7) at the Kirksville Hy-Vee to collect kitten food for the Adair County Humane Shelter and for Field of Dreams Rescue; we also invited cash donations to KV-POP to fund spay/neuter vouchers to prevent unwanted litters. The community responded generously: 110 pounds of kitten and cat food plus $483.79 were collected. Thanks to our volunteers and everyone who participated in KV-POP's Kitten Season Food Drive! |
Thanks to the Kirksville Daily Express, KIRX's "Area Scene," and KTVO for helping KV-POP raise awareness about kitten season.

IRS Approves Application for 501(c)(3) Non-Profit Status
The IRS has officially recognized KV-POP as a 501 (c) (3) non-profit public charity! The effective date of exemption is July 15, 2013; this means that even donations made during our first months of existence will be tax deductible. If this news inspires you to write another check or make a donation online, by all means do!
Successful March Spay/Neuter Campaign
Our March 2014 Spay/Neuter campaign was a big success: 172 pets (97 dogs and 75 cats) were fixed and won't be having any more babies! Please join us in thanking local veterinarians and their staff for enduring a super busy month for the good of local pets.
KV-POP gave away 80 coupons good for $20 off spay/neuter at a special event on World Spay Day. But the campaign exceeded the organization’s goal of getting 80 pets fixed in one month. In fact one clinic alone – Adair County Veterinary Clinic – performed 91 surgeries during the month. Other participating clinics were Kirksville Small Animal Hospital, Lindquist Veterinary Care Centers (of Kirksville and Edina), La Plata Veterinary Clinic, and Animal Health Center of Lancaster.

KV-POP's Third Public Meeting
We held our third public meeting on Tuesday, April 8, 2014 from 7:00-8:30 PM. Our focus was on humane education. Laci Cook of Pawsitive Animalworks was there to give some general dog training advice and to answer questions about dog behavior. What a terrific way to learn how to get along better with our furry friends. Thanks, Laci!
Coupon Giveaway Big Success!
To commemorate World Spay Day (Feb 25, 2014) KV-POP gave away 80 coupons good for $20 off the cost of spay/neuter. We had a great turn-out. Lost of people in our area want to do the right thing -- get their animals fixed -- but need help paying for the procedure.
We feel great about helping 80 animals get fixed before the usual spring litters. There aren't enough homes for all of them. Spay/Neuter to prevent the suffering of unwanted litters!

On Saturday, December 7, Field of Dreams Rescue presented a check for $1500 to Kirksville – Protect Our Pets.
KV-POP will use this money to help people who could not otherwise afford to spay and neuter their pets. The group issues vouchers and coupons to make the spay/neuter procedure more affordable. KV-POP is a new organization that is dedicated to community outreach for the benefit of the area's pet dogs and cats; it does not shelter homeless animals.
Over the past three years Field of Dreams’ spay/neuter voucher program has assisted hundreds of individuals in the community. At this time the foster-based rescue is discontinuing that program so that it can focus its efforts on finding homes for unwanted cats and dogs.
The complementary missions of these two organizations inspired the donation. This event marks the beginning of a cooperative and collaborative relationship as they work together to end animal homelessness in our area.

Two December Fundraisers
On Saturday, December 7th, KV-POP sold pet toys and treats at the Holiday Market (craft fair). It was fun to tell people about our new organization and help them pick out something special for the furry ones on their shopping lists.
On Wednesday, December 11th, Ruby Tuesday hosted a "Give Back" event for KV-POP. When folks brought in our special flier, Ruby Tuesday donated 20% of the price of their meal to KV-POP.
Thanks to everyone for coming out to these two events! Thanks to Alpha Sigma Gamma for organizing the craft fair and to Ruby Tuesday for giving back to local charities!

Special Meeting on November 5th
Thanks to everyone who came out to our second public meeting on Tuesday, November 5th. Together we generated lots of ideas for humane education and fund raising. Within the next two months we will be working to distribute hay to low income folks so that their outside pets can keep warm, talk to school children about caring for their pets in the winter, add another level to our spay/neuter voucher system, and conduct two fund raisers (craft show and restaurant event). Check back here for updates. Our next public meeting is being planned for April 8, 2014.
